Bondi Beach

About Bondi Beach

Each year, thousands of tourists are drawn to the white sand, blue water and vibrant lifestyle of Australia’s most famous beachside suburb. Bondi Beach is best known for being the most popular beach in Australia.

Over the past many years Bondi Beach has had a dramatic rise in the number of magnificently constructed, contemporary houses and apartments which take advantage of the excellent ocean views.

The valley running down to the beach is world famous for its vista of distinctive red tiled roofs, under which can be found an eclectic mix of semidetached houses and apartments dating back to the early 1930’s, California Bungalows and large freestanding houses. Bondi is the closest beach to Sydney’s CBD and while white settlement began with cattle run in the early part of the 19th century, the area began to develop around the middle of that century. The ocean baths were constructed in 1886 and the Bondi tram lines completed in 1894.

Shopping is mostly limited to parade of chic café’s, restaurants and pubs adjacent to the beach but if needed the latest additions of Harris Farm & Woolworths have provided locals easy access for their local grocery shoppin popular with tourists, backpackers and Sydneysiders alike. Other shopping in the area caters to well to do locals with several fashion boutiques, while shops offer beachwear and there are plenty of souvenir shops.

Bondi beach is best known for having the most popular beach in Australia, and the crowds throughout summer, especially on weekends, can be enormous. It is always entertaining to watch hoards passing by: from sunburnt back packers and tourists to fitness freaks and a range of colourful characters.

The area is well served with public transport to the CBD with 380 busses travelling regularly to Circular Quay or 365 to Edgecliff station. Trains also leave often from Bondi Junction which is near by. There are several gyms in the area, but if you live in Bondi Beach you should focus your exercise regime on the beach. The surf rolls in fairly reliably.
