Clovelly

About Clovelly

Clovelly is a mainly residential suburb on Clovelly Bay. Clovelly Beach is a small beach that sits on the end of the narrow bay. The bay is popular with swimmers. The bay is home to one of the first surf lifesaving clubs in the world, which was founded in 1906. Originally known as Little Coogee, the name was changed to Clovelly in 1913. Today the suburb is affectionately referred to as "Cloey" by many residents and locals.

Clovelly Beach lies between Bronte Beach to the north and Gordon's Bay to the south. It is a small and tranquil beach, located at the mouth of a narrow bay between two rocky ridges. A breakwater at the mouth of the bay provides protection and creates a calm swimming environment. It is particularly popular with family groups and the elderly.

Concrete platforms and promenades have been constructed on both sides of the bay. The promenades are popular sun-baking spots. There are access steps into the water, making Clovelly Beach more like a large ocean pool than a beach. The beach is a very popular snorkelling site with a diverse range of underwater marine life. The beach is home to a large local Blue Groper nicknamed "Bluey".

Clovelly has four small shopping precincts all on or near Clovelly Road. The largest is at the corner of Fern St and Clovelly where there (amongst other businesses) a post office, community bank, chemist, newsagent and bottle shop. At the corner of Arden St and Clovelly Road is another small precinct including another newsagent. At the corner of Carrington and Clovelly Road there are a handful of shops. Close to Clovelly Beach there are shops in a small precinct where Burnie St meets Clovelly Road.

Property is at a premium in Clovelly with a mix of small apartment buildings, semis & free standing houses with houses averaging about $1,600,000 but on the move up. There are two primary schools in the suburb, one government and one Catholic. Older children need to travel to neighbouring suburbs for school.
