Vaucluse

About Vaucluse

Perched on the South Head peninsula, with the Pacific Ocean to the east and Sydney Harbour to the west this picturesque residential suburb offers some of Sydney’s most incredible views and desirable real estate.

The suburb is known for its many mansions and extravagant multimillion dollar homes. Many of these are set in gorgeous, impeccably maintained gardens and have impressive sandstone walls. It still ranks among Sydney top five most expensive suburbs.

Vaucluse takes its name from Vaucluse House, a historic 19th century Gothic style estate now open for public inspection. The original house was built by Sir Henry Brown Hayes who was transported to New South Wales in 1802 for kidnapping the daughter of a wealthy Irish Banker. The Governor considered Hayes to be a troublesome character and in a bid to distance him from Sydney granted him permission to buy land three kilometres away.

Another of Vaucluse’s historic landmarks is the Macquarie Lighthouse which was the first and longest serving lighthouse site in Australia. Standing on the eastern side of the suburb at Dunbar Head, the lighthouse is still fully operational and is featured on the crest of Macquarie University. One of the most treasured natural attractions in the area is Neilson Park. Within the boundaries of Sydney Harbour National Park, this leafy retreat is bordered by white sandy harbour beaches and verdant bushland with two separate venues available for hire.

Just around the corner lies Vaucluse Beach which is the only one in the municipality that has maintained its original shape.
